New NIH Restrictions: Appendices

The NIH is implementing some changes that restrict the types of materials that are permitted in the appendix of grant applications. These new restrictions will take effect for applications submitted on or after January 25, 2017. You can learn more about what types of material are acceptable appendix items here.

We will be closed on Thursday November 24th, in observance of the National Thanksgiving Holiday.

In order to give our operations personnel a much needed free day to spend with friends and family,

BioScience Writers will be closed on Thursday November 24, in observance of the National Thanksgiving Day Holiday.

We will close at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 23rd and will resume normal hours of operation on Friday, November 25th.

The NIH Center for Scientific Review: ½ point scale

The NIH Center for Scientific Review, the Center that reviews the grants received by the NIH, recently conducted a pilot study and found that scoring grant applications on a 0.5-point scale reduced score compression and minimized the number of ties. Reviewers who participated in the pilot study felt that providing half-point increment improved their ability to prioritize applications. Read more about the pilot study and results here.

BSW to present at the Pediatrician-Scientist Training & Development Program at TCH

Part two of our half-day workshop series at Texas Children's Hospital will take place November 22nd, 2016. Dr. Susan Marriott will provide essential guidance to 2nd year Pediatric Residents. This course will focus on planning and preparing to write a grant proposal, time management, and the structure and content of individual grant sections.

BSW to present half day workshop series at the Emory University Medical School, December 2nd, 2016

President Susan Marriott, Ph.D. will be presenting two half day workshops. Our first presentation will encompass writing case reports and clinical manuscripts. Our second half day workshop will focus on grant writing which will discuss premise, data repro, etc., responding to reviews and creating reviewer enthusiasm.

Dr. Marriott will be available to answer any questions you may have after the presentation.

NIH Grant Review: Statistics

The NIH grant review criteria now require applicants to describe robust, unbiased, and well-planned statistical analyses for all experiments. The NIH Center for Scientific Review: Free online briefings

The NIH Center for Scientific Review, the Center that reviews the grants received by the NIH, will be hosting three online briefings for applicants and reviewers, coming up in November and December. These free briefings will offer tips on how to strengthen your application for a favorable review at study section and include specific tips for Basic Research, R01 grants, and fellowship applications. All briefings will have a Q&A session and encourage participants to send their questions in ahead of the presentation date. Get more details and register here for these free briefings.

Dr. Susan Marriott to present at the Pediatrician-Scientist Training & Development Program at TCH

Dr. Susan Marriott will present part one of our half-day workshop series at Texas Children's Hospital. As an introduction to PL-1 interns, Dr. Susan Marriott, will define strategies and procedures for each case study and following courses. This personal setting will allow PL-1 interns to develop and improve with their writing skills. This course will take place October 17th, 2016.

BioScience Writers will present the CAREER DEVELOPMENT - Effective and High Impact Scientific Writing workshop at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)'s Meeting in Boston. The full-day workshop will be held on June 16, 2016 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Publishing and funding success are key factors in career advancement, and this success requires an ability to write clearly and effectively--especially in today's competitive environment. Unfortunately, many scientists do not receive formal training in scientific writing and must learn these skills by trial and error.
